Uterine Transplant In India

Uterus transplantation is a pioneering procedure that offers fresh hope to women with AUFI. The procedure calls for the replacement of an infertile woman's uterus with a functional one, which can either come from a living donor or a deceased donor. Many women with conditions such as a congenital absence of the uterus or endometriosis might be given a new possibility of carrying their own baby through this procedure- a miracle they thought they never were going to experience.

  • Preoperative Evaluation: Before the transplant is performed, both the recipient and the donor are placed under extensive medical checkups. The recipient is carefully assessed to ensure that her overall health, fertility potential, and ability to take immunosuppressant drugs after the surgery are all sound. The donor's uterus is also placed under extensive checkup to confirm that it is healthy and free of conditions such as fibroids or infections. Blood type matching is also considered in order to increase the possibility of a successful transplant.
  • Preparation for Fertility: In most cases, the recipient will undergo fertility treatment to stimulate egg production. These eggs are then harvested and fertilized in a laboratory via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). The resulting embryos are frozen and stored until the recipient's body has fully recovered from the transplant, at which point they can be implanted into the transplanted uterus.
  • Surgical Procedure: Uterus transplantation is a very complex surgery. Surgeons at Gleneagles Hospitals take great care to remove the donor uterus and connect it to the recipient's body, ensuring that blood vessels, muscles, and other vital structures are well integrated. The health and recovery of the living donors are also taken into consideration, along with much care. Both the recipient and the donor are taken care of in an ICU post-surgery for pain management and infection prevention.
  • Rehabilitation and After-Surgery Care: Recovery after uterus transplant surgery is gradual and requires close medical supervision. The recipient and the donor receive intensive post-operative care, including pain management and immunosuppressant medications to prevent rejection of the transplanted uterus. These medications also increase the risk of infections, so constant monitoring is essential. The recipient is closely observed to ensure that the uterus is healing properly and functioning as expected.
  • Pregnancy After Uterus Transplant: After the recipient has fully recovered, the next step is embryo transfer. The previously frozen embryos are transferred to the newly transplanted uterus, and early pregnancy is monitored closely. Because the recipient is on immunosuppressant drugs, the pregnancy is considered high-risk, and both maternal and fetal health are carefully managed throughout the pregnancy.

In the case that the pregnancy is successful and reaches term, the recipient will deliver a healthy baby. After delivery, the transplanted uterus can be removed if the woman does not wish to have more pregnancies. However, if she wishes for another child and both mother and baby are healthy, the uterus can remain in place for a second pregnancy.

Risks of Uterine Transplant Surgery

Like any major surgery, uterus transplantation poses some risks, such as:

Rejection of the transplanted uterus

The body's immune system may try to reject the new uterus and will need lifelong use of immunosuppressant drugs.

Surgical complications

The procedure is complex, and there are risks of bleeding, infection, or damage to surrounding organs.

Risks associated with pregnancy

Since the recipient is on immunosuppressants, the pregnancy might pose extra risks, like preterm labour, gestational diabetes, or high blood pressure.
